Tunku Imran Congratulates Malaysian Contingent For Emerging As KL2017 Overall Champion

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) president Tan Sri Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar praised the Malaysian contingent for emerging as the overall champion of the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games (KL2017).

He said the credit should be given to the Malaysian national sports associations, team managers, coaches and also the technical officials who helped create and present a great platform in the 29th edition of the biennial games in which the athletes could show their true prowess.

Malaysia emerged as overall champion for the second time after the 2001 edition with a medal haul of 145 gold, 92 silver and 86 bronze, followed by Thailand in second place (72-86-88) while Vietnam came in third with 58 gold, 50 silver and 60 bronze medal.

"Well done Team Malaysia on winning an incredible 323 medals, including a sensational 145 gold. Malaysia Boleh (Malaysia Can!).Kita Juara (We are champions),"he said in his closing remarks for KL2017 which were also attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, here, tonight.

Tunku Imran, who is also Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president, also acknowledged the effort undertaken by the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) who successfully organised a magnificent and memorable Games despite facing a number of challenges along their way.

He also pointed out that the huge turnout from the public at the competition venues during the 17-day KL2017 had inadvertently added excitement to the Games.

"They include the colourful and raucous cheerleaders from the various countries and of course, last but certainly not least, the volunteers.

"They were everywhere.They were friendly, polite and helpful. Malaysians are proud of you. Well done volunteers," added Tunku Imran.

The Philippines will host the 30th SEA Games in 2019.
